Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to use a plot in the community gardens?
Residents of the community are eligible to apply for a garden plot.
What are the responsibilities of someone using a community garden plot?
Plot holders are generally responsible for planting, watering, weeding, and maintaining their assigned plot. They may also need to participate in communal tasks, such as maintaining pathways or shared spaces.
Is there a waitlist for garden plots?
If all garden plots are assigned, residents can join a waitlist. Waitlist priority is based on the order of application.
How is the community garden managed?
Management is typically handled by a Volunteer Garden Coordinator (VGC), in collaboration with community office staff. Responsibilities may include organizing meetings, enforcing rules, and overseeing communal supplies.
Do I need to bring my own gardening tools and supplies?
Some of the community gardens already have basic tools and supplies, such as shovels, watering cans, and hoses, in a shared storage area. However, plot holders may need to bring personal items like gloves, seeds, or specific fertilizers and may be responsible to provide preferred tools and/or resources.
What should I do with weeds, plant debris, and other green waste?
Green waste is collected in designated bins. Plot holders are expected to dispose of organic waste responsibly and keep their plots tidy.
Are there rules for shared areas in the community garden?
Shared spaces, such as pathways, tool sheds, or communal planting beds, should be kept clean and accessible to all. Plot holders must avoid blocking pathways or leaving personal items in these areas.
What happens if I can’t maintain my plot?
If you’re unable to maintain your plot, notify the Volunteer Garden Coordinator as soon as possible. There are guidelines for relinquishing a plot if it becomes neglected.
If I relocate to another GFH community, will I get to keep my plot?
No, you will be released from your garden plot and will need to apply to the waitlist at the new community.
Where do I dispose of weeds, pruned leaves and stems, spent vegetable plants, small branches and twigs, and other green waste materials?
A Green Waste bin is located on the east side of the CALA building and between the community trash and recycle compacting machines. Use code 4321 to unlock the padlock. There are no composting sites throughout GFH at this time.
Padlock Code (Green Waste Bin)?
4321: Please relock the padlock when done.
