What is the Tritons Speak Out survey, and why is it being conducted?

Tritons Speak Out is an anonymous survey that asks questions about experiences, community norms, and resources and support surrounding sexual violence and sexual harassment at UC San Diego. The overall goal of the survey is to gather information that can be used to improve services, support, and prevention education for students.

The survey uses the ARC3 survey instrument, which is a validated survey that has been widely used in higher education institutions. ARC3 was created by a large team of sexual assault researchers, experts, and advocates, and student affairs professionals. You can learn more about the survey instrument at the ARC3 website.

FAQs

How will the survey information be used?

Information gathered from the survey will be used:

  • To tailor campus resources, support, and education efforts to our community’s strengths, norms, and needs
  • To determine sexual violence and sexual harassment rates among students, so that changes over time can be identified and addressed

We invite all students who are interested in taking the survey to complete it, so that our community is fully represented in the survey responses, and so that action steps taken in response to the survey can also serve our entire community.

Where can I access support and resources on campus surrounding sexual violence and sexual harassment?

UC San Diego has resources to support students who have experienced sexual violence and sexual harassment. Support is also available for students who are helping someone else with these experiences. Please see the resources listed below to get help, or report the situation.

Yes! The survey is for everyone. It is important that as many members of our community take the survey as possible. The survey asks questions about community norms and beliefs, as well as institutional resources and support, in addition to experiences with sexual violence and sexual harassment.

What incentives are offered for taking the survey?

As a recognition of your time and effort, those who complete the survey will be entered into weekly drawings and a grand prize drawing for gift cards. The earlier you complete the survey, the more chances you will have to win. Prizes include:

  • (2) $50 gift cards per week
  • (4) $25 gift cards per week

At the close of the survey, a final drawing will be held, with the grand prizes including:

  • (1) $200 gift card
  • (4) $100 gift cards

Winners can choose their gift card from a list of vendors.

How long does the survey take?

The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Exactly how long will vary from person to person. Some questions have follow-ups that vary depending on how the first question is answered. All questions on the survey are optional. You can skip any question you do not wish to answer, and still finish the survey.

If you need to close the survey window or take a break, your progress will be saved if you wish to return later and complete it.

How can I access the survey?

All undergraduate, graduate, and professional students will receive an individual invitation to complete the survey via their UC San Diego email. Invitations will go out on Monday, April 7th, 2025 from “Tritons Speak Out Survey” with the subject line: INVITATION: “Tritons Speak Out” Survey.

How will my data be protected?

The Tritons Speak Out survey is an anonymous survey. Email addresses are NOT linked to individual survey responses, and there is no way to connect a survey response to a specific individual. Email addresses will be used only to send survey invitations and reminders and to select winners for the gift card drawings. Additionally, the results of the survey will be reported only at the group level, with responses combined to prevent the identification of individuals.
